Hi PIFC Members (and a few friends)
Developments at the Pacific Island Food Coop-Saipan are happening at a fast pace! Here's an update!
1. MEMBERSHIP UPDATE:
We now have 34 members in our less-than- 1 month old Food Coop!
2. OUR FIRST GROUP ORDER!
And it seems those members are really serious about getting their healthy eat on!
as soon as possible)
Remember, we're placing our first group order on Friday October 20, 2006.
Which means you must have your shopping list in by at least Tuesday of that week
so we can compile it, compute the total, and email you back in enough time
to get the funds to us.
Remember: Using the Suggested Shopping List or Walt's Shopping List as a guide,
find what you want on Amazon.com's "Gourmet Food" "Grocery,"
or "Health & Personal Care" Sections. (Please limit your requests to items from
ShopNatural, VitaminShoppe and BarryFarm for now)
(Amazon sells products from ShopNatural, VitaminShoppe, BarryFarm and others,
so there's no need to go to the individual websites. Do you searches right on Amazon)
Our kickoff meeting on Sept 30 was a huge success!
(If you cannot see this picture, it's on the website at
As you know, even though this is a labor of love for
those of us who are organizing it, it does take money
to keep certain things going and, so as not to unfairly burden those who
are doing the work, we developed the following fee structure.
3a. ORDERING DETAILS
All orders are subject to a 10% Administrative fee.
(eg. If you place a $50 order, the admin. fee is only $5.00)
This is to partially
compensate Irene's Global Resources co for
collecting and compiling all member orders
- locating suppliers
- arranging delivery terms
- negotiating bulk discounts
- picking up orders from Post Office
- sorting and storing/holding orders for member pickup
3b. MEMBERSHIP FEE
Also, starting in January 2007, we'll be requesting a $5/month
membership fee. This will give us time to place a few group orders,
iron out the kinks in the system and show real value for your 5 bucks!
This is to partially offset expenses Walt's Passionprofit company
incurs in maintaining the Food Coop website, setting up the company,
maintaining bank account, merchant account and associated credit card
fees, bookkeeping for the coop, collecting funds, web hosting, etc.
(Members will be asked to pay $5 per month or $50 for the year if paid all at one time. We'll notify
everyone of the details further down the line)
And remember, you'll probably be paying $0 in shipping costs,
so even with these fees, your participation should still be cost effective.
4. OUR OFFICIAL NAME
By the way, the official name of our group is
THE PACIFIC ISLAND FOOD COOP
(please forgive references to "South" Pacific I may have been
making along the way. We're an inclusive group, after all!) :-)
5. NEW LOOK FOR THE WEBSITE!
I'm really excited about this one, since this is my own pet project!
I've updated the website to include pictures, archives of these
email updates, links, suggested shopping lists, and much more! Please
check it out and make any suggestions (be gentle, remember it's still in
6. FLIER TO HELP SPREAD THE WORD
I've created a simple flier to help members spread the word.
Download the pdf at
Print it, make copies and help spread the word!
7. NEXT MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT
Our next member meeting is Saturday, October 21, 2006 at 12 noon at Ystilo
You don't want to miss this one! We'll give an update on our progress,
report on the success of our first order,
ask for your suggestions as well as your help in keeping things growing, AND,
(drum roll please....)
at that meeting, Health Fusion, Saipan's first mobile
health food delivery service will be catering the food and presenting
culinary selections to give you taste of what life can be like here on the
vegetarian/healthy side of paradise! Invite your friends!
BONUS: WALT'S SHOPPING LIST
And, now, as promised, just to give you an idea of items I personally like to
have around, here are some items I will be ordering. Next time I'll share
with you a shopping list from another member. (email me if you have
any questions about any item listed below)
You can find all of these
items on Amazon.com (BarryFarm.com, ShopNatural.com, VitaminShoppe.com
and others all do business through Amazon, so no need to go to each individual
website. Find YOUR desired items on Amazon, and then let us do the ordering

PART II: "SUPERFOODS" I HAVE ON HAND AT ALL TIMES
These are my secret weapons for staying fit, firm and full of energy.
Since the fruits and veggies I'm currently eating are not organic.
if you're not familiar with these items you can do a search
on the internet or on Amazon.com. The product listings often
have additional nutrition information.
- Dulse Flakes (for a nutritional seasoning soups and salads)
- Spirulina powder (rich source of minerals)
- Chlorophyll (internal deodorizer keeps the body alkaline)
- Aloe Vera Juice (see amazon list above)
- Barley Grass Powder
- Green Vibrance Powder (see amazon list above)
- Floradix multivitamin (see amazon list above)
- NOW (brand) Lecithin
- Braggs Apple cider vinegar
- Bragg's Kelp seaweed powder (seasoning for my stirfry veggies)
- NOW(tm) Eco-green MultiVitamin

- Acidophilus (replaces the natural flora in the intestinal tract that
you've lost if you've ever taken antibiotics)

- Millet ((high protein, alkaline grain alternative to rice)
- Teff (great source of iron)
- Irish Moss (a traditional Jamaican favorite; helps men replace zinc and other minerals
that they lose. In fact, it's the main ingredient in a drink we call "Put It Back."
If you're not sure how men "lose" zinc, ask a Jamaican man! :-)
Here are some additional items
I typically have on my shelves
- Organic Cereals*
- soy milk, rice milk, oat milk *
- Fantastic Foods(tm) scrambled tofu mix
- Food For Life Ezekiel 4:9 Bread (my favorite non-flour bread;
Right now I have a stash I got during my recent trip
- Brown Rice* (I get this at JoeTen)
- Organic Millet* (I think this is the same as "Yellow Sticky Rice" which HMart, Payless,
and 99 Cents Store all sell in their Chinese dry food sections; probably not organic)
- For now I get my veggies at Sabulo Market and sometimes from JoeTen
- Organic Olive Oil
- Flaxseed Oil
- Spike(tm) seasoning
- Mrs. Dash(tm) Seasoning
- Braggs Liquid Amino (available at Joe-Ten Garapan)
GRAINS, NUTS AND SEEDS
-organic flax seeds
So this is just to offer a place to start for those who might
be new to this. Each week, perhaps, we'll feature a different member's
shopping list to encourage questions and discussions that will inform
and educate each other as to the benefits of what we eat and practice in
our individual health-conscious lifestyles.
That's it for now.
Wishing you Perfect Health, Long Life and the Fountain of Youth
p.s. Remember, we're all part of something new that will go
through changes as we grow. But this is YOUR coop, so please make any suggestions,
and be prepared to volunteer to do things so we can improve what we're doing...
and please be patient!
p.p.s Wouldn't it be nice if this grows to a point where we can hire people
full or part-time to run the operation and provide a job or passion-centered
income for a few people? hmmmm..
